Martyn passed away on Monday 8th October 2007 after battling cancer for 5 years. He played board 2 for his university behind top board William (Bill) Hartson who was twice British Champion. He resurrected his chess some 2 years ago playing for [[West Bromwich]] in both the Wolverhampton and Birmingham leagues. He also served as a councillor on Sandwell Council. He will be missed by his many friends.

Martyn G. Smith 1946-2007

Martyn passed away on Monday 8th October 2007 after battling cancer for 5 years. He played board 2 for his university behind top board William (Bill) Hartson who was twice British Champion.
